Wineries In Campania

A piece of Georgia in Campania

Last weekend I had the pleasure of visiting the Enoz winery located in Sessa Aurunca, province of Caserta. There I had the opportunity to see that there is a piece of Georgia in Campania too. In fact, this winemaking activity will produce three types of wine by 2024, a Primitivo, a Fiano and a Falanghina entirely with the Georgian method. This winemaking method is particular. Both white and red wines are poured into large underground terracotta amphorae, called kvevri or qvevri, to first allow fermentation and then refinement. The practices to be carried out are slightly different depending on local traditions. For example, in Imereti (western part of Georgia) the wines are placed in amphora without skins, while in Khakheti (eastern Georgia) they are fermented and refined on the skins.

The terracotta of the pots, kvevri or qvevri, guarantees a natural treatment, enhancing the characteristics of the variety and the terroir. Something that Roberto Zeno is particularly keen on; the owner of Enoz. In fact, in his opinion, even in Italy the territory should be taken into account, or to put it in French, the more correct and broad term terroir, in addition to ensuring that there are Cru areas as in France. Therefore, importance should not be given to individual varieties as done in Italy. He will produce bottles for 2024 with the Khakheti method. It is difficult to forget the very pleasant orange aromas that I was able to detect in the samples of his Falanghina produced in amphora. I can only wish him the best for his future production.
