A winery that is worth a visit in Campania is certainly the Cavalier Pepe estate located in via Santa Vara, Sant'Angelo all'Esca, Avellino.
What amazed me a lot was the professionalism, availability and hospitality offered to me by the owner Milena Pepe and by one of her staff Andrea di lei who followed me during the tasting. The latter, although he does not have any sommelier certification, but only some as a taster, showed himself to be very prepared and professional and has nothing to envy of a sommelier.
However, let's start from the beginning when we arrived on time and were told that we had to wait for some latecomers. Nonetheless, I am not left to my own devices, on the contrary, there is Milena Pepe who entertains all the guests. Furthermore, a breakfast consisting of croissant, company gadgets, water and juice is offered to everyone without distinction between those who only did the tasting and those who had lunch and did the harvest, as offered by the company for the event "Open cellars in San Martino ".
The part that surprised me the most, in a positive sense, was the tasting as it was well prepared. In fact, in addition to correctly distinguishing between glasses of red and white, there was a specific glass for each wine tasted, something that I did not find even in all the Grand Cru cellars visited in Burgundy and in a premier class B of Saint Emilion, France. As an additional note, I was followed in every wine tasting by Andrea, who took a lot of time to explain to us every single organoleptic note of every wine tasted. Therefore we did all three tests (visual, gustatory and olfactory) with him. The serving temperature of the wines was optimal, something I also haven't found elsewhere, perhaps the fiano was a little too cold, so much so that I had to warm the glass a little with my hand, to feel all the aromas. Another note of merit is that all these services have been given at an affordable price. The quality-price ratio is more than excellent.
When the actual tour begins we are taken to the vineyard where Guyot fiano is grown. There is an explanation of the territory of Irpinia and its relative fortune in times in which many wineries have problems linked to climate change. In fact, in Irpinia in recent years the phenomenon of drought has been almost absent.

Once the part in the vineyard is finished, I am taken to the cellar. Even in this place, before the visit and tasting there was a pleasant welcome. In fact, I was made to try, perhaps a little unscheduled, the "Oro" sparkling wine, obtained with the Charmant-Martinotti method. Subsequently taken to the cellar where I take a look at the amphorae used for the refinement of "Appio", there I also notice the new medium-toasted oak tonneaus from Garbellotto which will be replaced by the previous medium-toasted French oak barriques present in the company (or at least that's what Andrea, one of the winery's employees, told me). So it must be seen how this affects the organoleptic notes of Taurasi and Fiano since both, the former by law and the latter by choice, must refine in barrels.
Furthermore, the owner Milena Pepe, a truly exquisite person, also gives importance to children, even if there has not been the purchase of an activity dedicated to them, simply by hugging them or taking them in her hand. So you have no excuses, this place can also be visited by large families.
Excellent review also for the cuisine of the 'La Veduta' restaurant just above the cellar and the room used for tastings.
